This summer the RIBA released the Inclusive Design Overlay to the RIBA Plan of Work. This ground-breaking guidance empowers and equips design, construction, and management professionals to create and operate inclusive and equitable buildings and spaces to welcome everyone.
At the London Expo, Steven will delve into what inclusive design is and why it matters. It will introduce the Inclusive Design Overlay to the RIBA Plan of Work and how it can be applied to your construction projects.
His details should be available on https://www.londonbuildexpo.com/ within the next couple of days.
Direct Access will also facilitate BSL sign language interpreters for the event, ensuring access to the event for architects, speakers, and attendees with hearing impairments.
At the New York Expo 2024, Steven will present a presentation titled “Accessible Design and Inclusive City Centers: Understanding the Public Right of Way rule”.
This bespoke presentation was formulated in response to the news that in August 2023, the Architectural and Transportation Barriers Compliance Board issued its final rule that sets out minimum guidelines for the accessibility of pedestrian facilities in the public right-of-way.
These guidelines will ensure that facilities used by pedestrians, such as sidewalks and crosswalks, constructed or altered in the public right-of-way by Federal, state, and local Governments are readily accessible to and usable by pedestrians with disabilities. It has been a long time coming since the introduction of the Americans with Disabilities (ADA) Act of 1990.
Right of way is an essential consideration for any development – how people with disabilities can access and interact with the building or services. This session will focus on the implications of the final rule both for Governments and Architects, when and how should access be developed, the key elements required for accessible sidewalks and crosswalks and action to take during temporary construction. It will be led by Direct Access Consultancy LLC – a team of people with disabilities undertaking public right-of-way assessments for Governments.
