Direct Access provided accessibility audits of three iconic Belfast entertainment and conference venues: Ulster Hall, Waterfront, and the International Convention Centre, Belfast (ICC), ensuring the sites’ full compliance with the requirements of the BS 8300 code of practice.

Ulster Hall is a grade A-listed building in Belfast, Northern Ireland. Situated on Bedford Street in Belfast city centre, the hall hosts concerts, classical recitals, craft fairs, and political party conferences. The building is an icon of entertainment history and features one of the oldest examples of a functioning classic English pipe organ. The venue has also been the host of various live performances from artists such as The Rolling Stones, Rory Gallagher, AC/DC, Metallica, Muse, Westlife, and Slayer.

Ulster Hall has been the host of numerous political rallies, including Lord Randolph Churchill and Sir Edward Carson‘s rally for opposition to Home Rule.

The Belfast Waterfront is a multi-purpose conference and entertainment centre, in Belfast, Northern Ireland. The main circular Auditorium, its largest, seats 2,241. In its smaller 350-capacity studio, many plays take place there every year, including operas, pantomimes, and musicals.

The hall is a key venue for the Belfast International Arts Festival and for concerts given by the Ulster Orchestra. In addition, the annual snooker tournament, The Northern Ireland Open has been held at the venue since its second year in 2017.

The ICC (International Convention Centre) Belfast is a 7,000m2 purpose-built conference facility in the heart of Belfast. It has a 2,200-seat auditorium, two interconnecting multipurpose halls spanning over 2,500m2, 20 meeting rooms for 10 to 200 delegates, as well as several gallery and bar areas.

The team at Direct Access delivered accessibility consultancy to these three Northern Irish pillars of culture and entertainment. Having worked extensively in Northern Ireland on UNESCO heritage sites including Mussenden Temple, Downhill Demesne, and other Causeway Coast and Glens Heritage sites.

Our auditors went beyond providing management with the necessary information to create enjoyable, inclusive experiences for disabled people by allowing this trio of venues to follow the requirements of the Disability Discrimination Act (DDA) 2005, Department of Finance Technical Booklet R Access, and the Buildings, Technical Booklet E Fire Safety, as well as Technical Booklet H, Stairs, and ramps.
