Access Audits to Accommodate All Pupils

Direct Access delivers accessibility audits that produce clear, usable outputs, not generic reports.

Many accessibility improvements do not require significant capital investment. Our audits identify where meaningful changes can be made with minimal or no cost, reducing reliance on reactive spending over time.

  • Our audits provide structured, evidence-based reports and prioritised action plans that:
  • Support your Equality Act 2010 obligations and Accessibility Plan requirements
  • Identify where your environment is creating barriers in practice
  • Enable targeted improvements that make your organisation easier to navigate, manage, and deliver within
Outcome:

Compliance you can evidence, and environments that function more effectively day to day.

Accessibility as an Environmental Performance Issue

In education, accessibility is often treated as a policy requirement. In practice, it is a question of how well your environment performs.

Barriers don’t sit in isolation, they show up as:

  • Delays between lessons
  • Increased staff intervention
  • Missed learning time
  • Behavioural pressure points
  • Inconsistent experiences across sites or departments
In structured, high-movement environments like schools, even small barriers can have a disproportionate impact on the school day.

Our audits identify where this is happening and why.

Accessibility Across the Education Journey

Accessibility is not defined by individual design features. It is defined by how the environment works across the day.

Direct Access assesses accessibility across the full experience, from arrival through to movement, learning environments, and participation in shared spaces.

Schools Accessibility Audits

Schools operate in structured, high-movement environments where accessibility issues can quickly translate into disruption.

Direct Access’s audits help schools:

  • Identify where the school day is being impacted by environmental barriers
  • Reduce reliance on staff workarounds
  • Provide a clear, evidence base for Accessibility Planning
Educational environments change constantly, with new cohorts, needs, and requirements each year. Our audits enable a proactive approach, reducing the need for reactive adjustments as needs arise.

Universities and Colleges Accessibility Audits

Universities and colleges operate across complex, multi-site environments, where accessibility is shaped not just by individual buildings, but by how spaces, services, and systems connect across the wider estate.

Direct Access’s audits provide a clear, structured view of accessibility performance across academic, residential, and public-facing environments, identifying where inconsistency, fragmentation, or design decisions are creating barriers in practice.

We assess accessibility across:

  • Academic environments: lecture theatres, seminar rooms, laboratories, and specialist teaching spaces
  • Student accommodation: access to halls of residence, internal layouts, shared facilities, and day-to-day usability
  • Campus facilities: libraries, student unions, dining areas, sports and recreational spaces
  • Movement across campus: routes between buildings, external environments, transport links, and wayfinding
  • Shared and public-facing spaces: where campus environments intersect with the public, including retail, event spaces, and community access points
  • Service delivery and systems: how accessibility is experienced across departments, faculties, and support services
Our audits:
  • Identify inconsistency across faculties, departments, and facilities
  • Assess accessibility across large or distributed estates
  • Provide a joined-up view of accessibility performance across the organisation
  • Highlight where accessibility issues are being managed through workarounds rather than design
Outcome:
A clear, prioritised understanding of where accessibility is breaking down across your estate, and how to improve consistency, usability, and overall experience.

From Insight to Action

Our audits produce clear, structured outputs designed for practical use.

You receive:

  • A structured, evidence-based audit report
  • Prioritised actions (RAGB) based on risk and impact
  • Clear alignment to legal duties and best practice
  • Practical recommendations that can be implemented over time
Safeguarding, DBS and Site Requirements

We recognise the safeguarding and compliance requirements involved in working within school environments.

Direct Access operates to robust organisational standards, with all Direct Access auditors holding Enhanced DBS checks and formal safeguarding training aligned to school environments.

Our work is supported by Risk Assessments and Method Statements (RAMS), insurance documentation, and agreed site protocols, ensuring full alignment with your safeguarding, security, and operational requirements.

We also work with 16–18-year-old education services aimed at NEET (not in education, employment, or training).

In front of it is a small but beautiful garden with a gravel walkway and a mixture of green yellow, and pink flowers.
