An inclusive solution for Welsh travelers

Direct Access has produced two Tactile Map Boards for Transport for Wales, which as of today are available and in use at the North and South entrances of the newly completed Cardiff Bus Interchange.

The inclusive wayfinding solution, which incorporates braille and tactile elements, sign language videos describing on-site facilities, and audio descriptions in two different languages (Welsh & English) is a highlight of the the Interchange rebuild, which was completed in July 2024 several years after the previous interchange was demolished.

As part of Transport for Wales’ initiative to modernise facilities at the new Interchange, Direct Access’ Tactile Map Boards are empowering individuals to navigate the new station independently.

Utilising QR coded technology, the map is embedded with sign language and audio description elements, which provide a detailed tour of the interchange for blind and visually impaired travelers from both entrances. These audio-visual elements are available ‘on the go’ to travelers who can scan the map with their mobile phones.

All of the digital wayfinding information on the Maps are stored directly on Transport for Wales’ servers, simplifying the procedure of updating the content as and when needed, and ensuring that the physical board itself is sustainable for the long-term.

The Cardiff Bus Interchange Tactile Map Board offers up to date information explaining the location of different areas within the interchange down the meter, including facilities and amenities such as restrooms, changing places, retail shops, and each individual bus station within the facility.

Featuring a sleek bespoke design featuring Transport for Wales’ recognisable branding and colour scheme and an overall high contrast palette, the maps are the very first of their kind on a mass transit network within Wales.
