Cavan County Council

In December 2022, Direct Access was commissioned by Cavan County Council with the support of the Department of Children, Equality, Disability, Integration and Youth to provide accessibility audits of 24 different sites under the Council’s jurisdiction. These sites included community buildings, public parks, trail routes, car parks, and nearby lakes, rivers, and waterfalls.

Public right-of-way elements were reviewed to ensure accessibility for wheelchair users, such as pathways, bridges, and trailheads. Additionally, amenities such as restrooms, picnic benches, and public information signage were reviewed for their accessibility to mobility-impaired and neurodiverse visitors.

Engaging the local disabled population to offer their perspective on inaccessible areas in their community, Direct Access hosted an accessibility consultation at Johnston Central Library, Farnham Steet, Cavan on 5th Dec 2022 to determine places that mattered the most to the locals and referred to these opinions in our final reports, allowing Cavan County Council to focus in on what their local community would like to see improved the most.

In addition to our audits, Direct Access produced a comprehensive Access Guide that detailed popular local attractions and noted their accessibility features in fine detail.

Accessibility details within the Access Guide highlighted the most frequently occurring factors that determined whether a disabled visitor would be able to enjoy a feature or site to the fullest extent, such as the provision of accessible parking, ramped bays, accessible signage, ramped access, visitor centers, picnic benches, sloped sections, and whether points of interest had staff present to assist.

The guide included reference to multiple trails, lakes, play areas, sports facilities (gyms, swimming baths, and GAAs) as well as popular cultural spots (cinemas, theatres, museums, and libraries) in the area, offering reviews for their inclusivity, while providing a simple but detailed description of what the  sites had to offer different disabled visitors.

As part of our site audits, Direct Access also provided accessibility guidance to facilitate improvements to the Baileborough Shamrocks FC grounds.
