Ordinarily,\u00a0an accessibility consultancy\u00a0would not comment on the\u00a0latest\u00a0hot-button\u00a0controversies\u00a0in\u00a0the world of show\u00a0business. But\u00a0the events\u00a0at the 2026\u00a0British Academy Film Awards raise questions that sit squarely within our professional remit.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

Direct Access works with\u00a0organisations\u00a0to translate disability inclusion from policy into operational practice. Inclusion is not achieved through statements of intent. It is\u00a0achieved through preparation,\u00a0communication,\u00a0and systems that\u00a0anticipate\u00a0complexity. This year\u2019s BAFTA ceremony exposed what happens when\u00a0inclusion runs only policy-deep… when it is declared but not\u00a0operationalised.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

What Happened<\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

Tourette syndrome activist John Davidson, whose life inspired the nominated film\u00a0I Swear<\/i>, was in attendance at the BAFTA ceremony.\u00a0During the ceremony he\u00a0experienced\u00a0multiple vocal tics, including the utterance of the N-word while\u00a0black\u00a0actors\u00a0Michael. B. Jordan and Delroy Lindo\u00a0were presenting an award.\u00a0The BBC, which aired the ceremony on delay, and BAFTA\u00a0subsequently\u00a0apologised.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

We now know that Davidson had been told \u201cany swearing would be edited out of the broadcast\u201d and the studio\u00a0behind\u00a0I\u00a0Swear\u00a0<\/i>had understood the same.\u00a0At the same time, Jordan and Lindo have confirmed that they had not been briefed in advance about the specific nature of Davidson\u2019s tics.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

A general announcement\u00a0was\u00a0made to guests in the room, that an attendee with Tourette\u2019s might experience vocal outbursts. That distinction matters. A general warning\u00a0is\u00a0not the\u00a0same\u00a0as\u00a0information prepared.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

Where it Broke Down<\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

Tourette syndrome can include coprolalia\u00a0(involuntary utterances of socially inappropriate or taboo language). John Davidson has publicly spoken about experiencing coprolalia as part of his Tourette\u2019s. These tics are neurological. They are not expressions of belief, intent, or personal values.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

Davidson himself described them as an \u201cinvoluntary neurological misfire\u201d,\u00a0which\u00a0makes\u00a0very clear\u00a0that the words do not reflect what he thinks or feels.\u00a0If coprolalia were understood as readily as physical access needs, this moment would not automatically have escalated into controversy.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

At the same time, the historical and contemporary weight attached to racial slurs cannot be separated from the moment in which they are heard. For Black presenters standing on a global stage, such language carries deep and ongoing trauma, regardless of intent.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

These truths are not in competition. The failure here was not Davidson\u2019s condition. Nor was it racial sensitivity. The failure was operational.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

What Operational Inclusion Requires<\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

It is important to acknowledge that BAFTA did not ignore the\u00a0issue\u00a0entirely. According to Davidson, he was told in advance that any swearing would be edited out of the broadcast. That\u00a0indicates\u00a0there was at least some pre-event conversation about how his Tourette\u2019s may present. But inclusion seems to have stopped at a private assurance.\u00a0Awareness was present, but awareness is\u00a0not the same as\u00a0operational\u00a0design.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

Scenario\u00a0planning is not optional. Both BAFTA and BBC knew four things in advance:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

  • A key guest has Tourette\u2019s with\u00a0vocal tics\u00a0<\/span><\/li><\/ul>
    • Specific offensive\u00a0language may occur\u00a0<\/span><\/li><\/ul>
      • The ceremony is broadcast globally\u00a0<\/span><\/li><\/ul>
        • The broadcast is on delay\u00a0<\/span><\/li><\/ul>

          Inclusion that works is systemic. It touches every stage of the process. \u00a0So\u00a0with that prior information, how should policy\u00a0be\u00a0translated\u00a0into\u00a0practice?\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

          Proactive and proportionate communication<\/b>\u00a0<\/span>
          Where\u00a0appropriate, attendees and presenters could have been discreetly informed that a guest\u2019s Tourette\u2019s includes coprolalia, so they were not caught off guard. Preparation does not require\u00a0spectacle. It requires sensitivity.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

          Environmental and seating planning<\/b>\u00a0<\/span>
          Large-scale live events are high-stimulation environments: bright lights, noise, crowd movement, unpredictability. For someone with Tourette\u2019s and coprolalia, that context can increase stress and\u00a0exacerbate\u00a0tics. Seating placement, traffic flow around his position, and proximity to microphones could have been considered in consultation with Davidson, with the aim of reducing unnecessary stimulus and supporting him to remain comfortable throughout the evening.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

          Pre-event walk-through and trigger mapping<\/b>\u00a0<\/span>
          Davidson could have been\u00a0walked\u00a0through the venue\u00a0or event maps\u00a0in advance to\u00a0identify\u00a0potential triggers, discuss stress points, and explore methods of engagement that might help him focus and reduce the likelihood of intense tic episodes. Inclusion is not about containment. It is about support.\u00a0Davidson could have been supported through the venue in advance to\u00a0identify\u00a0potential triggers and discuss stress points.           Ultimately, he\u00a0left the ceremony\u00a0early,\u00a0and that was before the social media backlash intensified. That detail alone should give\u00a0organisations\u00a0pause.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

          Broadcast contextualisation built into the run-of-show<\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

          If producers knew specific language could be involuntarily uttered, a clear line of editorial protocol should have been established in advance:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

          \u2013 A prepared on-screen caption or presenter statement explaining that a guest has Tourette\u2019s with coprolalia\u00a0<\/span>
          \u2013 A pre-agreed decision about whether such moments would be edited or contextualised live\u00a0<\/span>
          \u2013 A named individual responsible for triggering that response during broadcast\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

          Context is not a principle. It is a production decision.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

          Without predefined ownership of that decision, the burden shifts to real-time reaction. That is not inclusion. That is improvisation.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

          Editorial certainty, not assumption<\/b>\u00a0<\/span>
          If swearing was expected to be removed, that safeguard needed to be technically secure and confirmed. Assumptions are not systems.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

          Shared context, not surprise<\/b>\u00a0<\/span>
          If the decision was to air the moment, real-time contextualisation should have been prepared in advance. Not as damage control, but as part of the broadcast plan.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

          None of these actions sensationalise Davidson\u2019s condition. They respect it.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

          Broadcasters routinely\u00a0contextualise\u00a0sensitive historical material. Editorial framing is not censorship. It is\u00a0a responsibility.\u00a0Inclusion is not about shielding\u00a0organisations\u00a0from discomfort. It is about ensuring that disabled people are not left exposed by incomplete systems.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

          Reaction Is Not Inclusion<\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

          The aftermath placed BAFTA and the BBC in an impossible position of their own making.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

          Editing the slur after the fact risks accusations of erasure or ableism.\u00a0<\/span>
          Airing it without preparation risks racial harm and public outrage.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

          This is precisely why inclusion cannot be reactive.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

          When inclusion remains policy-deep, institutions are forced into damage control. When it is operationally embedded, difficult scenarios are anticipated, rehearsed, and responsibly managed.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

          The Broader Lesson<\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

          The presence of a disabled person at a major cultural event is not inclusion in itself.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

          Inclusion is the infrastructure that supports\u00a0them\u00a0before,\u00a0during, and after the moment.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

          Davidson has expressed profound distress and apologised directly to those affected. That human reality should not be lost in the polarised commentary, nor should this incident be reduced to a crude debate about whether someone \u201cmeant\u201d what they said.           Nor should this become a false binary between disability, advocacy and racial justice. This was a collision of two realities that both deserve to be treated seriously: the neurological involuntariness of coprolalia, and the historical and contemporary trauma carried by certain words when heard by Black people in public space. The error is not that these realities exist in the same room. The error is that the room was not prepared for them to coexist.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

          This should be understood as a case study in operational readiness.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

          In moving forward, the lesson is not about silencing people with\u00a0Tourette\u2019s or\u00a0treating neurological difference as something that must be hidden to preserve \u201cpolite society\u201d.\u00a0It is about\u00a0contextualising\u00a0disability with empathy and\u00a0clarity,\u00a0before<\/i>\u00a0harm and misunderstanding take hold. Disability inclusion cannot be conditional on comfort. Racial sensitivity cannot be treated as negotiable. Both must coexist, even when that coexistence is uncomfortable.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

          It is not idealistic to expect broadcasters to recognise that conflicting needs can share space, and that acknowledging the needs of one protected group should not mean minimising the needs of another. That is precisely what inclusion is supposed to mean: not the avoidance of complexity, but the capacity to hold it responsibly.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

          If we are serious about building a society that understands neurological conditions as readily as it understands physical access needs, then incidents like this must prompt education rather than erasure. John Davidson\u2019s presence at the BAFTAs was not\u00a0a\u00a0problem. Our collective lack of preparedness\u00a0and our failure to translate inclusion into real\u00a0systems\u00a0was.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

          True inclusion means resisting the urge to hide what unsettles\u00a0us and\u00a0instead committing to the harder work of explaining it. Even\u00a0(where possible),\u00a0seeing the\u00a0humour\u00a0in the absurdity of it.\u00a0Humour\u00a0can coexist with seriousness when the person at the\u00a0centre\u00a0is not being reduced or\u00a0dehumanised.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

          True inclusion requires anticipating discomfort. It requires planning for complexity. It requires recognising that the needs of different protected groups may intersect, and sometimes collide, in ways that demand thoughtful, pre-emptive systems.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

          Policy statements are easy.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

          Operational inclusion is harder.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

          But when it is properly embedded, it protects people, strengthens institutions, and makes cultural spaces braver, not smaller.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

          Consider how with properly embedded operational inclusion, both the BBC and BAFTA could have strengthened,\u00a0(not damaged)\u00a0their reputations as British\u00a0broadcasting\u00a0institutions.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

          With\u00a0properly\u00a0integrated inclusion, they could have expected not just\u00a0to have\u00a0a happier\u00a0viewership, but a broader one. They would surely reach\u00a0new demographics that the film\u00a0I Swear<\/i>\u00a0was able to attract by nature of its subject, and the\u00a0BAFTA\u00a0ceremony itself would see a rise in further minority and disabled filmmakers\/creatives who\u00a0feel\u00a0comfortable attending.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

          Given that the film industry\u2019s major\u00a0studios\u00a0operate\u00a0on inclusive policies themselves, more opportunities have been provided to filmmakers\u00a0that\u00a0identify as\u00a0disabled, and BAFTA would be in a strategic position to accommodate their accessibility needs.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

          However, if\u00a0BAFTA\u00a0wishes\u00a0to award\u00a0disabled filmmakers\u00a0for their efforts and\u00a0revitalise\u00a0their prestigious image,\u00a0they have a lot of work to do.
