The failure here was not Davidson\u2019s condition. Nor was it racial sensitivity. Preparation does not require\u00a0spectacle. It requires sensitivity.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><b>Environmental and seating planning<\/b>\u00a0<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Large-scale live events are high-stimulation environments: bright lights, noise, crowd movement, unpredictability. For someone with Tourette\u2019s and coprolalia, that context can increase stress and\u00a0exacerbate\u00a0tics. Seating placement, traffic flow around his position, and proximity to microphones could have been considered in consultation with Davidson, with the aim of reducing unnecessary stimulus and supporting him to remain comfortable throughout the evening.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><b>Pre-event walk-through and trigger mapping<\/b>\u00a0<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Davidson could have been\u00a0walked\u00a0through the venue\u00a0or event maps\u00a0in advance to\u00a0identify\u00a0potential triggers, discuss stress points, and explore methods of engagement that might help him focus and reduce the likelihood of intense tic episodes. The error is not that these realities exist in the same room. The error is that the room was not prepared for them to coexist.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">This should be understood as a case study in operational readiness.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">In moving forward, the lesson is not about silencing people with\u00a0Tourette\u2019s or\u00a0treating neurological difference as something that must be hidden to preserve \u201cpolite society\u201d.\u00a0It is about\u00a0contextualising\u00a0disability with empathy and\u00a0clarity,\u00a0<i>before<\/i>\u00a0harm and misunderstanding take hold. Disability inclusion cannot be conditional on comfort. Racial sensitivity cannot be treated as negotiable. Both must coexist, even when that coexistence is uncomfortable.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">It is not idealistic to expect broadcasters to recognise that conflicting needs can share space, and that acknowledging the needs of one protected group should not mean minimising the needs of another. That is precisely what inclusion is supposed to mean: not the avoidance of complexity, but the capacity to hold it responsibly.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">If we are serious about building a society that understands neurological conditions as readily as it understands physical access needs, then incidents like this must prompt education rather than erasure. Our collective lack of preparedness\u00a0and our failure to translate inclusion into real\u00a0systems\u00a0was.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">True inclusion means resisting the urge to hide what unsettles\u00a0us and\u00a0instead committing to the harder work of explaining it. Even\u00a0(where possible),\u00a0seeing the\u00a0humour\u00a0in the absurdity of it.\u00a0Humour\u00a0can coexist with seriousness when the person at the\u00a0centre\u00a0is not being reduced or\u00a0dehumanised.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">True inclusion requires anticipating discomfort. It requires planning for complexity. It requires recognising that the needs of different protected groups may intersect, and sometimes collide, in ways that demand thoughtful, pre-emptive systems.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Policy statements are easy.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Operational inclusion is harder.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">But when it is properly embedded, it protects people, strengthens institutions, and makes cultural spaces braver, not smaller.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Consider how with properly embedded operational inclusion, both the BBC and BAFTA could have strengthened,\u00a0(not damaged)\u00a0their reputations as British\u00a0broadcasting\u00a0institutions.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">With\u00a0properly\u00a0integrated inclusion, they could have expected not just\u00a0to have\u00a0a happier\u00a0viewership, but a broader one. They would surely reach\u00a0new demographics that the film\u00a0<i>I Swear<\/i>\u00a0was able to attract by nature of its subject, and the\u00a0BAFTA\u00a0ceremony itself would see a rise in further minority and disabled filmmakers\/creatives who\u00a0feel\u00a0comfortable attending.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Given that the film industry\u2019s major\u00a0studios\u00a0operate\u00a0on inclusive policies themselves, more opportunities have been provided to filmmakers\u00a0that\u00a0identify as\u00a0disabled, and BAFTA would be in a strategic position to accommodate their accessibility needs.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">However, if\u00a0BAFTA\u00a0wishes\u00a0to award\u00a0disabled filmmakers\u00a0for their efforts and\u00a0revitalise\u00a0their prestigious image,\u00a0they have a lot of work to do.
