Let\u2019s keep it focused on facts and practical implications.<\/div>\n<div aria-hidden=\"true\" data-ogsc=\"black\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div data-ogsc=\"black\">There\u2019s a lot of political noise about repealing the Equality Act. If you believe in a leaner state, less red tape, and a common-sense approach to law, you might think &#8216;good, one less regulation.&#8217;<br>But before accepting that premise, it\u2019s worth looking at who is actually protected by this Act.<\/div>\n<div data-ogsc=\"black\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div data-ogsc=\"black\">Because it isn\u2019t a niche set of rules for a tiny minority. It\u2019s the legal framework that affects nearly everyone at some point in their life.<\/div>\n<div data-ogsc=\"black\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div data-ogsc=\"black\"><b data-ogsc=\"\">Myth 1: &#8220;It only protects wheelchair users.&#8221;<\/b><\/div>\n<div data-ogsc=\"black\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div data-ogsc=\"black\">In reality, the definition of disability is so broad that it covers 1 in 4 people in the UK\u2026.around 16 million of us. This isn\u2019t about &#8216;other people.&#8217; It\u2019s about your neighbour with arthritis, your mate with dyslexia, your colleague recovering from cancer, or your father with depression or diabetes. Around 80% of disabilities are non-visible. The idea that this is a niche issue falls apart when you realise how ordinary and how common these conditions are.<\/div>\n<div data-ogsc=\"black\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div data-ogsc=\"black\"><b data-ogsc=\"\">Myth 2: \u201cIt\u2019s about identity politics.\u201d<\/b><\/div>\n<div data-ogsc=\"black\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div data-ogsc=\"black\">A large proportion of the Equality Act deals with age, pregnancy, maternity and disability; all things that most families encounter at some point.<br><br><\/div>\n<ul>\n<li data-ogsc=\"black\">\n<div role=\"presentation\" data-ogsc=\"\">Age discrimination law protects both younger and older workers.<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li data-ogsc=\"black\">\n<div role=\"presentation\" data-ogsc=\"\">Pregnancy protections ensure someone isn\u2019t pushed out of work for starting a family.<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li data-ogsc=\"black\">\n<div role=\"presentation\" data-ogsc=\"\">Disability protections often apply to acquired conditions later in life.<\/div><\/li>\n<\/ul><div><br><\/div>\n<div data-ogsc=\"black\">Strip away the headlines, and much of this law governs ordinary life events, not ideological categories.<\/div>\n<div aria-hidden=\"true\" data-ogsc=\"black\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div data-ogsc=\"black\"><b data-ogsc=\"\">Myth 3: &#8220;It only benefits minorities.&#8221;<\/b><\/div>\n<div data-ogsc=\"black\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div data-ogsc=\"black\">This is the biggest misconception. The Equality Act is a mirror; it reflects the protections back onto everyone.<br><br><\/div>\n<ul>\n<li data-ogsc=\"black\">\n<div role=\"presentation\" data-ogsc=\"\">A young man starting his career is protected from age discrimination just as much as a 60-year-old.<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li data-ogsc=\"black\">\n<div role=\"presentation\" data-ogsc=\"\">A father taking paternity leave stands on the same legal ground as a new mother.<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li data-ogsc=\"black\">\n<div role=\"presentation\" data-ogsc=\"\">A Christian, a Muslim, and an atheist are all protected from discrimination because of their belief or lack thereof.<\/div><\/li>\n<\/ul><div><br><\/div>\n<div data-ogsc=\"black\">This isn&#8217;t about giving special rights to some; it&#8217;s about establishing a baseline of fairness that applies to all of us, throughout our lives.<\/div>\n<div data-ogsc=\"black\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div data-ogsc=\"black\">\n<div data-ogsc=\"black\"><b data-ogsc=\"\" data-olk-copy-source=\"MessageBody\">Myth 4 : &#8220;It\u2019s just HR red tape; scrapping it would free up business.&#8221;<\/b><\/div>\n<div data-ogsc=\"black\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div data-ogsc=\"black\">This sounds appealing, but it misunderstands what the Act actually does.<\/div>\n<div data-ogsc=\"black\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div data-ogsc=\"black\">Since 2010, every business and public body has built its processes around it, from how they design a website, to how they construct a public building, to how they handle a grievance.<\/div>\n<div data-ogsc=\"black\">\n<p>It is the rulebook.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-ogsc=\"black\">Scrapping it wouldn&#8217;t remove the need for rules on discrimination; it would just remove the current rulebook. It would create years of legal chaos while courts and businesses figured out what the new rules were. For a business owner, the question isn&#8217;t &#8216;do I want fewer rules?&#8217;, it&#8217;s &#8216;do I want a decade of expensive legal uncertainty?&#8217; The current Act, for all its faults, provides a settled framework. And settled frameworks create stability.<\/div>\n<div aria-hidden=\"true\" data-ogsc=\"black\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div data-ogsc=\"black\">At Direct Access, we don&#8217;t see the Equality Act as a political slogan. We recognise the reality that it is operational infrastructure, like building regulations or health and safety law. You might not like it, but you have to know how it works.<\/div>\n<div data-ogsc=\"black\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div data-ogsc=\"black\">The hard truth is this: accessibility isn&#8217;t a fringe political issue. It is a demographic reality for a nation where one in four of us lives with a disability, and where our population is getting older. Scrapping the rulebook doesn&#8217;t change that reality.
